I’VE NEVER HAD BETTER! The following is my experience...\n\nThe performance of my chair was stellar with one exception. A few times a day it would freeze, give an audible warning (machine protection), and display a code. I thought perhaps I was straining it in some way. I observed the next few instances and decided there was no physical cause for it to fault. I exchanged messages with Robooter though Amazon, with prompt replies, and then got a call. Their engineers had been unable to determine the exact cause, so they were immediately shipping me a new chair. The probable cause was the lower controller board, but they were not positive. I asked that the engineers be advised that I am capable with electronics service and that they ship me a board to install. If successful, this would save time and a huge amount of expense on their part. A text the next day had the tracking number and a link to an installation video. I installed the board, and the chair is working perfectly with no more fault codes. Great customer support? YEP.\n\nNow my only suggestion for Robooter. The remote-control app is very useful. One more note, if you are intimidated by buttons, computers, apps and modern electronics in general, you will have a hard time adapting. I think it only needs a name change! I had one concern about some wrinkles in the fabric of the seat back and Kai made sure the fabric was replaced with no questions asked!\n\nOne fun thing is how many residents stop me to look at and talk about my “space ship,” which is what many of them call it. The men all want to inspect the tires because they are so different from any tires they’d seen. I don’t know much about tires but I do love that they allow me to make a 360 turn … especially nice in the elevators. I cannot walk long distances due to a neurological condition. My wife and I have always loved to travel. We tried a portable chair for a while that my wife would push but that was difficult for her and required that she had to always be with me. So, 5 years ago, we bought my Smartscoot. It's been a game changer. We've been to Europe several times since then and even as far as Australia, as well as many trips domestically. I have freedom and so does my wife. I have even gone on a few trips by myself. I don't understand some folks' complaints that the scooter is too heavy. 40 lbs? It's the lightest thing on the market I've seen. I and my wife, who is 67, can easily pick it up, especially when you take the seat off to put it in a car etc. as it is then only about 27 lbs, even with the battery still on it. Someone complained it doesn't have a key lock. What good would that do? At 40 lbs if someone wants to steal it, they'd just pick it up and take it away. Now, some real life experience. When traveling by plane, I drive to the cabin door, take off the seat, and fold the handle down. My wife takes the battery inside. (At first, airlines were leery about the battery but no one seems to care much anymore.) I have a leather belt I cut down and I put around the handle bar and the lower bar, because it's almost impossible to keep the airlines from trying to pick up the scooter body by the upper bar instead of by the lower one as is suggested. The scooter came with a velcro strap for the same purpose but I found it wasn't sufficient to prevent the handle bar from coming loose if one tries to pick up the scooter that way. After getting the scooter ready, I go to my seat and the airline puts the seat and the body in the body of the plane. Upon arrival, the airline brings the parts up. Sometimes they put the seat on but I have to take it off to release the leather belt and reassemble with the battery. I don't mind that as that's better than someone in the crew getting smacked in the face by lifting by the upper bar. Once reassembled I then drive up the walkway. Note: disassembly and assembly takes at most a couple of minutes. 2nd note: as the seat comes off, at check in you should get 2 tags, one for the body and one for the seat just in case stuff happens - like once where we had connecting flights and the airline insisted on checking the scooter to the final destination, the seat arrived but the scooter did not until the next day. 3rd note: I do not take the basket or cup holder when traveling as they make the scooter more susceptible to damage and would slow down disassembly. Airlines can be rough. On 2 of the trips we have taken there was some minor damage (knocked the light off and bent a wire near the brake handle but the airlines made it good quickly). Now for some practical tips I have learned. The scooter can tip if you get on an unlevel surface and try go too fast for conditions or try to turn quickly downhill. You can make it more stable if you move the wheels out as far as they can go but then that would affect whether you can enter some doors. I prefer keeping the wheels in closer so I don't have to keep moving them. So, I watch my conditions and try to ensure I am pointing down straight before starting down an incline. With a bit of practice, it gets easy to drive safely. Also, don't get going too fast downhill, especially if it is steep. If you try to stop too quickly, your momentum may cause the back of the scooter to come up. Physics works that way. So take it easy. Going uphill has not been a problem unless it is very steep. I like to lean forward so I get more weight over the front driving wheel for better traction. Where very very steep or where the surface doesn't have much traction, my wife will assist by pushing on the back of the seat. Thankfully, this is not necessary very often. In short, 5 years later, I'm still chugging along. The battery is starting to show a little less range before needing recharging but I'd say even now I get at least 8 miles (as opposed to the 12 when it was new) before needing recharging. Pretty darn good I say. I keep looking to see if there is anything close to the Smartscoot for price, durability etc but I haven't seen anything. The others out there are much heavier and do not fold down or disassemble as easily and quickly for airline travel or even local travel. Would I buy one again? There are 2 spots for steel attachments for your baggage to rest on. I have used both spots the front one is most useful. The one under the seat not so much, maybe for a cpap machine. Navigating through the airport is a breeze. I can have a small carry on in the front. and a LARGE rolling bag I can pull with my left hand and drive with the right.
